Soak chana dal for 4 hours.
Drain and wash dal and add to pan of boiling water. Be careful not to overcook the dal, but it does need to be soft; 10 minutes should be enough time. While this boils, prepare the remaining ingredients.
Drain the now soft (not mushy) dal and blend. This should give you a consistency of couscous.
Combine all the ingredients together.
If you have a burger press, this would be ideal, if not, place a large tablespoon's worth of mixture onto some cling film and press into a small patty.
Heat a heavy bottomed frying pan with some oil and cook a few of the fritters on a medium heat until golden. These will absorb the oil in the pan, but that is fine.
This is a great low carb substitute to potatoes. Experiment with the ingredients. I might add some more chilli to my next batch, but this recipe is very mild and only has a hint of chilli flavour. The mint and cabbage give a lovely fresh flavour. This roughly makes 10 fritters. I calculated the nutritional value and each fritter has 40 calories, 1.8g total fat, 1.4g carbohydrate, 356mg sodium and 18.6mg cholesterol.
