Sweet and sour BBQ sauce

    It's like a cross between Chinese sweet and sour sauce and traditional BBQ sauce. Very tasty and interesting. Can be used as a dip or a marinade, or maybe even a pasta sauce.

    Serves: 10 

    • 1/2 red onion, chopped
    • 3 small chiquino peppers (sweet peppers), chopped
    • 1 chilli, chopped
    • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
    • 150ml water
    • 4 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons clear honey
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 10 tablespoons tomato ketchup
    • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

    1. Add all ingredients except the tomato ketchup, Worcestershire and lemon juice to a medium saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    2. Add the tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice to the pan and bring back up the boil. Once at the boil, turn the cooker off and stir sauce.
    3. Sieve the sauce into a heatproof jug, pressing with a spoon to drain all of the juice.
    4. Let the sauce cool, then pour into an empty bottle or just serve and enjoy.


    If you can find it use a drop of liquid smoke seasoning to enhance the flavour of the BBQ.
