Prep:20min  ›  Cook:30min  ›  Ready in:50min

  1. Preheat oven to 200 deg. C
  2. Line a baking tray with baking parchment
  3. Sift flour into a large bowl and sprinkle on salt and bicarb.
  4. Mix these ingredients thoroughly but gently by hand.
  5. Pour in buttermilk and mix well by hand. Do not work the dough too much, this is not a conventional bread that is kneaded.
  6. Turn out onto a floured surface and form into a ball, tucking the edges under as you go.
  7. Place on tray and dust with more flour.
  8. Cut a deep cross into the ball.
  9. Place in oven for 30 mins and when done the loaf should sound hollow when tapped on the base.

You can add extra flavours such as grated cheese if you wish.
