Potato and celeriac gratin

    This delightful potato and celeriac gratin is a comforting and rich addition to a meal. Balance the meal out by serving with cold meats and a salad.

    Serves: 6 

    • 450g (1 lb) potatoes, thinly sliced
    • 450g (1 lb) celeriac, thinly sliced
    • 1 large onion, sliced
    • 300ml (1/2 pt) single cream
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • 110g (4 oz) smoked ham, chopped
    • 225g (8 oz) Gruyère cheese, grated
    • salt and pepper, to taste

    1. Preheat the oven to 170 C / Gas 3.
    2. In a large saucepan with boiling salted water, cook the potatoes, celeriac and onion for 3 to 4 minutes until they begin to soften.
    3. Meanwhile, in a saucepan over a medium heat, bring the cream to a simmer and add the garlic, ham and half of the Gruyère cheese. Once the cheese has melted, remove from the heat.
    4. Drain the potato and celeriac and transfer to a baking dish. Pour the cheesy cream sauce over the potato and celeriac and top with the remainder of the cheese. Season well.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until the cheese melts and the top layer begins to get crispy and golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
