Authentic chickpea curry

    This recipe was given to me by my boss who is Asian. It has been passed through generations of her family so as you can imagine it is the real deal. Very healthy and super tasty. You can serve it as a side or main . I love it with Kobaz bread and a samosa.

    Serves: 4 

    • 2 (400g) tins chickpeas
    • 1 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda
    • oil for frying
    • 1 onion, finely chopped
    • 1 teaspoon garlic and ginger paste
    • 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
    • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
    • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
    • 2 blocks frozen chopped spinach

    Prep:10min  ›  Cook:35min  ›  Extra time:10min soaking  ›  Ready in:55min 

    1. Drain and rinse the chickpeas then soak in water along with the bicarbonate of soda. Leave for 10 minutes, then drain and rinse thoroughly.
    2. Fry the onion in a bit of oil until golden. Then add garlic and ginger paste along with chilli powder, salt, turmeric and garam masala. Stir until all spices are absorbed.
    3. Add the tomatoes and frozen spinach and stir. Add the chickpeas and stir lightly. Leave to simmer for 20 minutes. If the sauce looks a little too thick add water.
    4. Serve with either rice, bread and bhaji or samosa.

    I really like the simplicity of this recipe and appreciate that it makes use of stuff that I always have in the cupboard - apart from the two tins of chickpeas...I only had one so had to substitute in a tin of well-rinsed baked beans. I also used a green chilli and some coriander leaves. Really pleased with the result, thank you for posting  -  22 Feb 2014


    found this a bit bland.but i couldnt get ginger paste so used powder.I used tin chickpeas,and followed recipe.The chilli gave it a kick,i added more ginger,garam, and coriander powder.overall good recipe,very easy.  -  02 Mar 2014
