Bacon and pasta

    Use Sainsbury's basic stuff and it will save you a fortune, as well as saving you a lot of time with this healthy summer dish.

    Serves: 1 

    • 2 to 4 bacon rashers (smoked or unsmoked)
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
    • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1 pinch caster sugar
    • herbs, to taste
    • pasta, of your choice

    1. Fry off the bacon, onion and garlic in a saucepan until the bacon is coloured and crispy and the onion and garlic are soft. The onion and garlic will take longer so while they are still cooking, take the bacon out and chop up.
    2. Add the bacon back to the onion mix, add the tomatoes, a twist of salt and pepper, a pinch of sugar and your herbs. You can also add your frozen vegetables here too. Simmer for about 5 to 10 minutes.
    3. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to instructions. Remove from heat and drain.
    4. Add the pasta to the bacon and tomato sauce and mix together and serve.


    This dish lets you be as creative as you want, you can add wine to the onions before the tomatoes to make it more wintery. You can add different veggies too, different meats, the lot.
    Season this dish to your taste with salt, pepper, sugar, mixed herbs or fresh basil.
    Optional extra veggies (frozen peppers, peas, carrots, mushrooms)
    The pasta ingredient is a loose measure, so add enough for a single or double serving for this dish.
    Serve this dish with cheese if you want.
