About this recipe: This delightful autumn apple crumble has been in our family for years and has never given us any surprises. Enjoy warm with custard or vanilla ice cream.


Serves: 8 

  • For the crumble
  • 125g plain flour, sifted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 110g caster sugar
  • 75g butter
  • For the filling
  • 900g cooking apples - peeled, cored and sliced
  • 55g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • 4 tablespoons water

    For the crumble:

  1. Combine the flour and salt in a bowl and mix in the sugar. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  2. Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas 5. Grease a pie dish.
  3. For the filling:

  4. Arrange the apples in a pie dish and sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon over. Mix the lemon juice and water together and pour over the fruit.
  5. Spread the crumble topping evenly over the apples so that they are completely sealed.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve warm.
