This recipe is incorrect. A raising agent is needed. I have found that 1/2 tsp baking powder works ok, sieved in with the flour. Also, the oven temperature and cooking time is incorrect. I cooked mine at Gas Mark 4, 180 (not fan) for 55 to 60 minutes and this seemed fine. With these changes the recipe makes a nice cake. I sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of demerara sugar over the top before cooking.  -  16 Mar 2016

Just made this....timing is wrong for a fan oven! I did adjust, but even then too hot at 180.... I could smell it cooking (usually remove my cakes then) but it still had 25 mins to go, so left it another 10 mins, and consequently it was over baked......too hot to try, but will let you know if it was worth it folks!!  -  01 Feb 2016

This recipe was amazing! It rose perfectly without any baking powder for me. I had some leftover wholemeal self raising flour which I didn't know what to do with so I used it here. Overall it was very good.  -  03 Dec 2017
