Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas 5. Grease a medium size baking dish.
Arrange the sliced bread in the baking dish in a pleasing way. In a separate bowl, beat together the milk, brown sugar, raisins, nutmeg and egg then pour over the bread. Sprinkle the top with golden caster sugar.
Bake in the oven for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden on top. If the bread begins to brown too quickly, cover with aluminium foil for part of the cooking. Remove from the oven and serve.
