After preparing all the ingredients heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large heavy pan and add all the vegetables and cook for 5 minutes.
Add the smoked bacon and fry for another 2 minutes.
Add the red wine, stock, tomato puree, tin of tomatoes and nutmeg, simmer for 25 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.
While the sauce is simmering fry the mince in a large frying pan until cooked.
When the sauce has been simmering for 25 minutes turn off the heat and add the fresh basil.
Blitz the sauce in a blender or processor until it is smooth and has no lumps.
Pour over the cooked minced beef and coat thoroughly, serve on a bed of freshly cooked spaghetti and sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. All you have to do now is sit back and enjoy with a glass of wine. Perfecto!
