140g soft brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
225g chopped dates
225g chocolate chips
190g self raising flour

Preheat the oven to 170 C / Gas 3. Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with baking parchment.
Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Beat in the milk and then add the dates and chocolate chips. Sift in the flour and fold to combine. Spoon into the prepared loaf tin and smooth the top.
Bake in the preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool fully before slicing and serving.
