Bramley apple crumble

    Bramley apples make the best crumbles and this recipe is no exception. Sweet and flavourful Bramley apples combine with the light crunch of the crumble to form a match made in heaven. Serve hot with custard or ice cream for a satisfying pudding.

    Serves: 8 

    • 8 medium Bramley apples - peeled, cored and quartered
    • 1 tablespoon caster sugar
    • juice of 1 lemon
    • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
    • 200g butter
    • 225g plain flour
    • 85g rolled oats
    • 100g soft brown sugar

    1. Preheat the oven to 190 C / Gas 5.
    2. In a saucepan over a medium heat, combine the apples, caster sugar, lemon juice and nutmeg. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes until the apples begin to soften. Remove from the pan and spoon into a pie dish.
    3. In a large bowl, rub the butter into the flour until fine breadcrumbs form then stir in the oats and brown sugar. Sprinkle the crumble over the apples.
    4. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the crumble is golden brown and filling is piping hot. Remove from the oven and serve.

    Halved ingredients. Used cinnamon as I had no nutmeg. Added a handful of frozen mixed berries. Used Stork baking block rather than butter as it's vegan. Served with Oatley vegan custard. Was lovey, really tasty & the crumble was great. Will definitely be making again. Thanks for posting.  -  23 Nov 2016


    Absolutely spot on recipe. Extremely tasty, the only thing I tweaked was by using dark Muscavado sugar, exactly the same amount though. Topped it with extra thick cream, just perfect.  -  21 Nov 2016
