Steak, Breaded Mushroom & Garlic Burger

About this recipe: There's nothing quite like a burger and just sometimes there is nothing better than a big fat juicy burger to satisfy the cravings. The sort that is messy, and I mean the whole messy juice down your chin type messy! If you are going to have one, have a proper one. We have a traditional sesame seed bun, but that is where we leave tradition at. My thinking here was a pub grub style dinner in a form of a burger. So inside our bun we have a fat 100% lean steak burger with no fancy ingredients other than lashings of fresh cracked pepper, sweet fried onions, crumbed and baked portobello mushroom, cheese slices and cream cheese mixed with garlic. Squelch down, squeeze and munch away. Have plenty of napkins to hand as you are going to need it. SERVES 2

  • 250g lean steak mince
  • 1 monster large onion, sliced
  • 4 cheese slices
  • 2 sesame seed buns, lightly toasted
  • seasoning to taste
  • 2 portobello mushrooms
  • breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 heaped tablespoons light cream cheese
  • 1 heaped teaspoon garlic paste
  • groundnut oil


  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees.
  2. Dip the mushroom into the beaten egg, drain then coat in breadcrumbs. Dip again into the egg and breadcrumbs. Repeat with the remaining mushroom.
  3. In a large non-stick fry pan, add a little oil. Brown the mushrooms in the oil for a couple of minutes on each side and then place onto a baking tray. Cook in the oven until golden, approx 20 minutes (depending on the size of your mushrooms).
  4. Meanwhile, in the same fry pan add the onions and cook slowly. While the onions are cooking make the steak burger patties by simply mixing the mince with a little salt and loads of cracked black pepper. Shape into 2 burgers and flatten with the palm of your hand or a burger press. Add to the fry pan with the onions. Fry slowly until cooked through and browned and the onions soft and sticky.
  5. While this is happening mix the cream cheese with cracked pepper and the garlic paste. Set aside.
  6. Bring the burger together by putting a slice of cheese on the bun base, add 1/2 tablespoons cream cheese mix, burger, onions, cheese, mushroom and another 1/2 tablespoon of cream cheese mix. Place the bun top on. Repeat with second burger and serve.
