Simple pot roast brisket with awesome gravy

    A very simple and tasty pot roast recipe which generates its own fabulous gravy. A nice dish served with mashed potatoes and veg that serves up to 6 people.

    Serves: 6 

    • 1 red onion
    • 1.5kg rolled brisket of beef
    • 2 beef OXO® cubes
    • 450ml water
    • 1/2 small glass of red wine
    • Bisto® gravy granules

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
    2. Chop onion into small pieces and put in bottom of casserole dish. Place brisket on top of onion layer (no need to brown or seal - have tested and makes no difference to outcome).
    3. Mix 2 OXO® cubes with 450ml (3/4 pint) hot water and pour into casserole dish. Pour in red wine then cover with lid.
    4. Place casserole in centre of preheated oven and allow to cook for 3 to 3 1/2 hours until meat is tender.
    5. Remove from oven and allow to stand for a few minutes before removing meat onto plate. Put meat to one side making sure it is kept warm with a covering of foil.
    6. Using a sieve, strain remaining liquid into a saucepan. Puree some of the the softened onion by pressing through the sieve. (I tend to puree half then dispose of the rest).
    7. Make up Bisto® powder as directed on the packet and carefully mix into the liquid whilst gently heating the saucepan making the gravy as thick or thin as you like.
    8. Carve meat and serve with desired veg and sides. Pour over gravy and enjoy!

    made this a few weeks back just had to write it to say trhankyou .first time i did wine with the juices of the beef and the gravy was lovely will be making it again  -  23 Jan 2016
