    A real heartwarming sausage dish from the oven with German frying sausage (bratwurst) and kidney beans that's great for those cold nights!

    Serves: 4 

    • 2 onions, sliced
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 450g German bratwurst, skin removed and sliced
    • 1 (400g) tin kidney beans, drained
    • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
    • 1 tablespoon cornflour
    • 2 to 3 level tablespoons chilli powder, or to taste
    • 2 tablespoons tomato purée
    • 450ml (¾ pt) beef stock
    • ½ (500ml) bottle medium/dry cider
    • salt and pepper

    1. Turn on the oven to 180 C / Gas 4 to preheat.
    2. Gently fry the onion in the olive oil till soft. Place in a casserole dish along with the sausage, kidney beans and tomatoes.
    3. Mix the cornflour, chilli powder and tomato purée together in a small bowl then add to the remaining oil in the pan and cook for 1 minute.
    4. Mix the stock and cider together then gradually add to the chilli mix in the pan, and then bring to the boil stirring constantly till thickened.
    5. Season well with the salt and pepper then pour over the sausage mix and cover.
    6. Cook in the oven for 1 hour. Serve with mashed potato and hot and crusty or soft rolls.
