Preheat the oven to 160 C / Gas 2/3. Grease a 20x30cm baking tin and line with baking parchment.
In a saucepan over a medium heat, combine the margarine, sugar and golden syrup and stir constantly until melted. Place the oats in a mixing bowl and pour the melted butter over and mix well until the oats are well coated. Set aside to cool, about 20 minutes. Once cooled, stir in the chocolate chips then transfer to the prepared baking tin and press down with the back of a spoon.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the tin. Once cooled, remove from the tin and cut into squares for serving.
Made these for the 1st time, the other day. Followed the recipe to the gram. ( don't usually ) Ended up like modelling putty. Just would not firm up, as flapjacks do. Even put it back in the oven for 20 minutes as most other recipe's suggest cooking for a total of 30 minutes. Maybe the recipe needs tweeking !!!!
