Empty apples into a large rectangular baking dish. Sprinkle with a little demerara sugar.
In a large saucepan gently heat the sugar, butter and golden syrup until all melted and combined. Turn off heat. Add the finely grated orange rind and ground rice and mix well. Finally, add the porridge oats and ensure all well combined.
Put the oat mixture on top of the apples spreading evenly to cover apples completely and sprinkle with a little demerara sugar.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve warm with cream or custard.
You can add cinnamon or cloves for a festive winter treat.
