About this recipe: I first tried this dish over a decade ago in Ipsos Corfu! It's a hearty meal any time of year for all ages.

Serves: 6

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 900g (2 lb) braising steak
  • 100g to 150g shallots, chopped
  • 1 large glass red wine
  • 1 splash red wine vinegar
  • 100g to 150g button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon light brown sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 900ml (1 1/2 pt) beef stock

  1. Preheat a slow cooker to Auto or Low setting.
  2. Warm the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and add the steak. Cook and stir to brown on all sides. Add the shallots and cook for a further 4 minutes until soft. Remove from the heat and place in the preheated slow cooker.
  3. Into the same frying pan, pour in the red wine and red wine vinegar and bring to a simmer for 2 minutes. Pour into the slow cooker and add the remaining ingredients. Give a good stir.
  4. Cook on Low setting for 4 to 6 hours or until the beef is tender. Spoon into warmed bowls and serve.

Really nice flavour but needed more all spice for our taste. I also thought there was a lot of 'juice' whereas with my mother in laws stifado it's more about the onions but me and my husband really enjoyed it! - 26 Aug 2015
