Classic apple crumble

    • 3 cooking apples - peeled, cored and diced
    • 100ml water
    • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • 125g self raising flour
    • 80g rolled oats
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 1 pinch salt
    • 225g butter or other fat
    • 1 sprinkle demerara sugar

    1. Combine the apples and water in a saucepan over a medium heat. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes until the apples start to soften and form a sauce. Some of the apple pieces should remain chunky, whilst others can be smaller. Sprinkle over the cinnamon and mix together. Put the apples to one side and begin to make the crumble topping.
    2. Pre-heat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.
    3. In a large mixing bowl add the flour, rolled oats and caster sugar. Mix evenly until the sugar has separated. Sprinkle in the pinch of salt.
    4. Time for the messy bit, rub together with your fingertips the dry ingredients and the fat until you have a bowl of larger clumps and smaller bits of crumble topping.
    5. In a medium size oven proof dish, add the apples to the bottom, distributing evenly. Carefully spoon over the crumble topping until all the apples are covered. Sprinkle with demerara sugar.
    6. Bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the crumble top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling with excitement.


    This family favourite is never turned down. Serve simply on its own, or with custard, ice-cream or cream. For a healthier version pair up with fat free yoghurt. Enjoy!
