    About this recipe: If you want a good, basic chilli con carne recipe - this is it. No secret ingredients, just mince, tomatoes, kidney beans and some spices. It's easy, delicious and sure to please everyone.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 8 

    • 900g beef mince
    • 2 onions, chopped
    • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • 2 tablespoons chilli powder, or to taste
    • 2 teaspoons salt
    • 2 teaspoons dried oregano, or to taste
    • 4 (400g) tins chopped tomatoes
    • 400ml tomato passata
    • 1 (400g) tin kidney beans with liquid

    Method
    Prep:15min  ›  Cook:1hr30min  ›  Ready in:1hr45min 

    1. Combine beef mince, onion and garlic in deep, large saucepan or pot. Cook and stir over medium heat until beef is brown. Drain off any fat.
    2. Stir in chilli powder, salt, oregano, tomatoes and tomato passata; break up tomatoes while stirring. Bring to the boil; reduce heat and simmer covered, stirring occasionally, for at least 1 hour.
    3. Stir in kidney beans. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes; stir occasionally.

    This is the only chili recipe I will make now. I do make some changes which I think makes it even better. Instead of using 4 cans of stewed tomatoes, I use 2 cans of stewed tomatoes and 2 cans of diced tomatoes w/ green chilis. This makes the chili spicy. If you don't like much spice, but want some spice, try 3 cans of stewed tomatoes and 1 can of the diced tomatoes w/green chilis. I think it's Del Monte that makes the diced tomatoes w/green chilis. I also add more beans and more chili powder. I keep twirking the recipe until I get what I like. I'm going to be making this for a chili cook-off really soon, so I'm hoping everyone likes it as much as my family does!  -  20 Apr 2004  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)

    Our family loved this recipe...even the kids. Rather than plain chili powder, I used The Spice Hunter brand's "Chili Powder Blend" which has cocoa powder, cumin, cinnamon and cloves, among other things. I really think that added a great flavor. I also used S&W brand Mexican seasoned stewed tomatoes. Delicious! One more thing,...I added my kidney beans in with the tomatoes rather than waiting an hour and it turned out fine.  -  05 Nov 2005  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
