Basic chewy flapjack

    This is a really chewy buttery flapjack recipe. Great on its own but also tasty when other ingredients are added such as chocolate chips and glacé cherries.

    Serves: 6 

    • 350g unsalted butter
    • 320g light brown caster or demerara sugar
    • 5 really good tablespoons golden syrup
    • 500g porridge oats
    • 1 pinch salt

    1. Preheat the oven to 160 C / Gas 2-3.
    2. Melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a saucepan.
    3. Add the porridge oats and salt. Stir until fully combined.
    4. Spoon into a baking tray (I use a shallow foil tray which doesn't need greasing). Pat the mixture down and level with your spoon.
    5. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes until the sides are turning golden brown but the middle still wobbles. Leave to cool completely on a wire rack.


    Add other ingredients such as chocolate chips, sultanas or freeze dried raspberries for extra flavour.
