Highly Addictive Indian Chickpea Curry

About this recipe: This recipe makes a delicious chickpea curry. There are quite a lot of ingredients here but I highly recommend giving it a try. This one always goes down well with guests. If you like it a bit hotter just add a couple more chillis.

  • 3 medium sized onions
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 3 spoons vegetable oil
  • 1 and a half teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground fenugreek
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3-4 green finger chillis
  • 2 teaspoons of paprika
  • 2 teaspoons of turmeric
  • 2 teaspoons of garam masala
  • 3 tins of chick peas
  • 1 tin of chopped tomatoes


  1. Finely chop the 3 onions
  2. put the vegetable oil into a large pan and cook the onions on a medium heat
  3. Crush the 4 cloves of garlic. Add the garlic, 1.5 teaspoons of salt. 2 teaspoons of ground cumin, and 2 teaspoons of mustard seeds.
  4. Brown for 10-15 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes.
  5. Once browned, add a teaspoon of ground ginger. Finely chop the 3-4 green chillis. Add the chillis to the pan.
  6. Heat for another 2-3 minutes.
  7. Turn down the heat and add 2 teaspoons of paprika, 2 teaspoons of turmeric and 2 teaspoons of ground fenugreek.
  8. Add 1 tin of chopped tomatoes. Mix well and heat for 2 minutes with the lid on. This will puree the tomatoes.
  9. Add 3 tins of drained chickpeas to the pan and cook for 5 minutes at a medium heat. (lid off from now on)
  10. Add 1 pint of water and 1 teaspoon of Garam Masala and stir well.
  11. Cook on a medium heat for 35-40 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  12. Add 1 teaspoon of Garam Masala and stir well. Serve and enjoy.
