110g dark brown soft sugar
250g treacle or molasses
375g plain flour
1 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground clove

Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas 5.
In a bowl, beat the margarine until creamy. Add brown sugar and egg; beat at high speed till thoroughly combined. Reduce speed to low and beat in remaining ingredients until smooth. Cover and chill the dough for 1 to 2 hours.
Shape the dough in 3cm balls and place on a greased baking tray; flatten slightly.
