Suet and milk free dumplings

    A basic dumpling recipe for those who don't use suet or milk (or in our case ran out of milk before we started). Makes 6 large or 12 small dumplings.

    Makes: 12 small dumplings

    • 250g self-raising flour
    • salt and pepper
    • fresh or dried herbs (optional)
    • 125g butter
    • cold water

    1. Put your flour into a bowl then add salt and pepper to taste. (Add your herbs here if including any, fresh parsley works well.)
    2. Add your butter and then rub the ingredients together to form breadcrumbs. Add a splash of cold water at a time until it forms a dough.
    3. Form 6 large balls or 12 small balls and then add into your stew.
    4. Make sure they're at least half submerged and leave them to cook for at least 20 minutes.


    Feel free to experiment with different flavours by adding different herbs
