The name is our own but this warming hot milk and turmeric drink is a popular and ancient natural remedy enjoyed in Indian homes, especially before bedtime. It is especially good when you have a sore throat or cold. It's tasty, has a mild flavour and very strong colour. Turmeric is increasingly being recognised as a superfood that has numerous health benefits and we've really noticed the difference it's made to our health. We recommend this drink to all our friends and family and wanted to share it with you, too.

    Serves: 2

    • 1cm piece fresh turmeric (or 1/4 teaspoon powder)
    • 475ml milk (cow milk or almond milk work well)
    • Optional additions
    • coconut oil
    • whole cloves
    • cardamom pods
    • fennel seeds
    • fresh or ground ginger

    1. If you have a Nutri-bullet or other blender, then blitz the milk and fresh turmeric together for two 30 second bursts. Alternatively grate the turmeric into the milk but wear gloves to avoid orange fingers! Turmeric stains like nothing else.
    2. Pour into a pan, adding any other additional flavours if liked. Heat slowly until it starts to boil and the milk froths up in the pan.
    3. Remove from heat and enjoy!

    Cook's note

The optional additions all add a lovely touch to this drink, however I like it as a simple bedtime drink and prefer the spices in the morning.
