Topalak - Meatballs and chickpeas in a tomato sauce

    • 1 cup of chickpeas (soaked in water overnight)
    • 3 cups of water
    • 1 1/2 tbsp tomato puree
    • 1 tbsp salt
    • 1 tsp pepper
    • 500g mince beef
    • 2 tbsp parsley
    • 1 tbsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp pepper
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tbsp flour
    • 1 onion
    • 1 tsp cumin
    • 2 tbsp butter


    1. Make the meatballs by putting the mince beef in to a bowl and adding the parsley, salt, pepper, egg and flour. Mix all together. Make into meatballs and put into the fridge until ready to use
    2. In a saucepan put 2 tbsp of butter then add the onions and fry for 5 minutes. Add the chickpeas and then the tomato puree. Add the cumin and 1 tbsp salt and 1 tsp pepper. Add the 3 cups of water and bring to the boil.
    3. Once you have brought the chickpeas to the boil, add in the meatballs. Give a stir, then put the lid on the saucepan and then let cook until the chickpeas and meatballs are cooked.
    4. Serve with rice, salad and yogurt.
