For a really easy Halloween party snack, simply wrap hot dogs in strips of puff pastry so they look like mummies.

Makes: 16 mummies
8 small hot dogs
475g ready rolled puff pastry
1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
pepper or paprika (optional)

Cut the sausages lengthwise. Make a small cut on opposite sides in the upper third to make it look like the arms attached to a torso. Make two longer cuts in the lower half to make it look like legs.
Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into 3mm strips.
Wrap each sausage piece with pastry strips. Don't be too orderly, it looks more authentic when you criss cross the strips every which way.
Brush the puff pastry with egg yolk and again, don't be too orderly. Sprinkle with pepper or paprika if desired.
Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Place the mummies on a baking tray and bake in the lower third of the preheated oven until golden brown, about 25 minutes.
If you want to make the portions bigger, don't cut the sausages in half but leave them whole. Make cuts in each sausage as described and wrap in pastry strips. Whole sausages might take a few minutes longer in the oven till heated through.
