Halloween chocolate spiders

    These adorable sweet spiders have a sponge base covered with chocolate icing.

    Ingredients
    Serves: 8 

    • For the base
    • 4 eggs
    • 120g caster sugar
    • 120g plain flour
    • For icing and decoration
    • Nutella® or chocolate spread of your choice
    • soft liquorice sticks
    • mini marshmallows
    • mini chocolate dragées
    • chocolate sprinkles

    Method

    1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.
    2. Separate the eggs. In a bowl beat the egg yolks with sugar till light and fluffy. In another bowl beat the egg whites till they stand in stiff peaks. Sift the flour into the egg yolk mixture and fold it in, then fold in the egg whites. Evenly spread the mixture onto the baking tray.
    3. Bake until golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the oven and invert onto a large piece of baking parchment or a clean tea towel. Let cool. Using a round biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out 16 circles, either two different sizes, eight of each, or all the same size.
    4. Generously spread Nutella onto half of the circles (if you made two different sizes, spread onto the larger ones) and cover with a second circle, like a sandwich. It does not have to be neat, if it's a bit rough, the spiders look even more real.
    5. Decorate the spiders with liquorice for the legs, mini marshmallow halves and chocolate dragées for the eyes, and scatter with chocolate sprinkles.

    Icing option

    Instead of Nutella you can make a homemade icing with 125g dark chocolate, 3 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons icing sugar. Melt the chocolate and stir in milk and icing sugar till smooth.
