Italian Bolognese

    This sauce is absolutely delicious. The secret is in the slow cooking on the hob. Try it and it will be your go-to bolognese recipe.

    Serves: 4 

    • olive oil
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 500g low fat beef mince
    • 6 cloves garlic, minced
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • 3 to 4 tablespoons tomato puree
    • 500g passata
    • 1 teaspoon sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon onion powder
    • 1 large handful basil, chopped
    • 175ml water

    1. Add oi to a large pan and sauté onion. Add beef and brown. Add garlic and cook for about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
    2. Add all the other ingredients. Mix well and bring to a simmer. On lowest heat let the pot simmer, uncovered for at least 2 hours. Stir occasionally and if thickening too quickly add some water. Serve with freshly cooked pasta.


    If you feel the sauce is a little sweet add 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar to balance it out.
