Cosy mulled wine

    This mulled wine is sure to warm up your guests when it's snowy or blustery outside! Add a mug of brandy to the pot just before serving, if you like.

    Serves: 6 

    • 200g granulated sugar, divided
    • 1L water, divided
    • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • 5 cloves
    • 1 (750ml) bottle red wine
    • 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and chopped into bite-size cubes (optional)

    1. Pour 1/2 the sugar, 250ml of the water, cinnamon and cloves in a pot; warm over medium heat until sugar has dissolved.
    2. Add red wine and remaining 750ml water; bring to the boil.
    3. Add remaining sugar and apple (if using); stir constantly, until sugar has completely dissolved.
    4. Remove from heat and ladle into heatproof glasses or mugs; serve hot.
