Cheesy steak gratin

    Tender slices of steak are baked with potatoes and broccoli in a creamy cheese sauce.

    Serves: 2 

    • For the gratin
    • 2 potatoes, peeled and diced
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 stalks broccoli, chopped
    • 420g (1 lb) sirloin steak, trimmed and cut into strips
    • Salt and pepper, to season
    • For the cheese sauce
    • 8 tbsp double cream
    • 8 tbsp crumbled Cheddar cheese
    • Salt and pepper, to season

    1. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees C (Gas Mark 7).
    2. Heat a pan of boiling water with salt and cook the diced potatoes for five minutes. Add the broccoli and cook for a further few minutes. Drain, place in a gratin dish and season with salt and pepper.
    3. Heat a griddle pan until it's very hot. Season the steak with salt and pepper. Cook the steak for two minutes and then place on top of the potatoes and broccoli.
    4. To make the cheese sauce, place the double cream in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Let it reduce and stir in the crumbled cheese. Season and pour the cheese sauce over the steak and potatoes.
    5. Bake in the preheated oven until bubbling, about 20 minutes.

    Thought i would try something different, This was a truly superb meal that required little or no effort and even the wife was impressed  -  07 Aug 2008


    Decided to try a new recipe for dinner, This was delicious! Went done wonderfully. I would suggest using cauliflower instead of broccoli though, as that tends to go better with cheese sauce Will definitely be eating again!  -  10 Dec 2012
