In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, onion, cloves and peppercorns over medium high heat. Slowly bring to the boil, stirring frequently. Once boiling, take off the heat and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes for the flavours to meld.
Remove the onions, cloves and peppercorns. Place saucepan over medium low heat and stir in the breadcrumbs until smooth. Add the butter and stir until melted through. Taste and season with salt and pepper as required.
