    Ingredients
    Serves: 10

    • 60g baking chocolate
    • 150g plain flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 60g butter
    • 200g caster sugar
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 40 red smarties or similar

    Method
    Prep:40min  ›  Cook:8min  ›  Ready in:48min

    1. Preheat oven to 190 C / Gas 5. Lightly grease baking tray.
    2. In a saucepan melt chocolate over low heat. Let cool.
    3. In a small bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt.
    4. In a medium bowl beat butter on low speed until smooth. Add sugar and beat until creamy. Stir in egg, vanilla and chocolate. Add flour mixture and mix well, forming a stiff dough.
    5. To make spider, shape a 5cm flat oval for the body. Make the spider's head by flattening a circle about 1cm wide. Shape dough for legs each about 4cm long and less than 6mm wide.
    6. Attach the head and legs to body. Put two red smarties into head for eyes. Bake for 5-8 minutes. Let spiders cool on baking tray to avoid breaking when moving.

This was a disappointing recipe. The dough was very crumbly; I had to press it together with my hands before I could form it into spiders. Of course, this made the actual shaping of the cookies very difficult! I ended up only making four because it was so hard, and putting the leftover dough (or should I say crumbles?) into the fridge for my family to eat. The spiders themselves, once baked, were pretty cute, but they were very hard and brittle. Several legs broke off in the process of moving the spiders, even though I let them cool as the recipe suggested. A few of the legs burned before the rest of the cookie was baked, as well. My siblings said they tasted okay, but not great. Sorry, but I will not be making these again!  -  04 Apr 2009  (Review from Allrecipes US | Canada)
