About this recipe: Again another recipe from school days and its the best one I've used - at least something good came out of school.

Scrambo Hampshire, England, UK

Serves: 4

  • 3 to 4 cooking apples
  • 6 oz (175g) sugar
  • 6 oz (175g) plain flour
  • 3 oz (75g) butter or margarine

Prep:2hr  ›  Cook:40min  ›  Ready in:2hr40min

  1. Using a sharp knife, peel and core the apples, then slice. You do not have to remove the skin if you do not wish.
  2. Place the sliced apples into a saucepan full of water and heat gently until the apples are soft. Occasionally taste the water and add sugar to your liking as the apples can be quite bitter.
  3. Once the apples are soft, remove them from the water and place into an ovenproof dish. Let them cool down and sprinkle some sugar over the top.
  4. Place the 6 oz sugar, butter and the plain flour into a mixing bowl, then rub together using your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Place the breadcrumb mixture on top of the apples.
  5. Bake at 200 C / Gas mark 6 for 30-40 minutes until the breadcrumb topping is golden brown.

a very nice basic apple crumble - 02 May 2013

This was a very simple and straightforward recipe that resulted in a very enjoyable desert. Certainly one to be tried again. One adjustment I made was at step three. Rather than sprinkle sugar on top of the apples, I drizzled two tabelspoons of maple syrup on them instead. - 13 Feb 2016
