Lucy's homemade Bolognese sauce

    Supermarket tomato based sauces contain a lot of salt and sugar. I don't understand why people use them when they can make it themselves, make it healthier, tastier and cheaper! I have a challenge for you all: Use this recipe in place of your usual jar for the next 6 months then try to go back to the pre-made stuff. You will never use the jarred stuff again!

    Serves: 5 

    • 1 tube pure tomato puree (no additives)
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 1 pinch sea salt or rock salt
    • 1 handful of fresh herbs, or dried herbs to taste
    • garlic cloves, crushed, to taste
    • 500g minced beef, cooked

    Prep:1min  ›  Extra time:2min marinating  ›  Ready in:3min 

    1. First, empty the tube of tomato puree into a very large cup and to it add the olive oil, salt and herbs. Stir.
    2. Next add a little water. Stir. Keep adding small amounts of water until you get the thickness you prefer.
    3. Pour over your meat, heat through thoroughly and serve on pasta with a little grated cheese.


    As there are no preservatives in this sauce, I do not recommend keeping it. I suggest you use it all immediately. I usually use a garlic Italian seasoning if I can't get a hold of the fresh herbs.
