Slow Cooker Venison Stroganoff

    We live in the far north where many people hunt and often we are given large amounts of wild meat. It can be fussy to cook with but in the crock pot it is always easy and delicious. If you have had wild meat before and did not like it, try it again as the butchering process has a lot to do with the gaminess. This is not a hard-and-fast recipe, please mess about with it and change the amounts of the ingredients to your tastes.

    Serves: 8 

    • 1 (400g) tin chopped tomatoes
    • 1 large onion, diced
    • 1 large red pepper, diced
    • 6-8 frozen sirloin venison steaks
    • 2 sachets onion soup mix (powdered)
    • 1 tin cream of tomato soup
    • pasta, rice or potatoes to serve
    • salt and black pepper to taste
    • To serve

    1. Unwrap and place frozen venison in large crock pot. Turn on High for at least 10 hours.
    2. Dice onion and saute in a little oil till softened. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour over meat in the crock pot / slow cooker.
    3. Add the rest of the stroganoff ingredients over the meat and cover. Stir occasionally to break up the meat as it thaws.
    4. Cook the pasta, rice or potatoes. When done, drain and place on plate. Scoop the venison stroganoff over the pasta, rice or potato. Serve and enjoy!


    This is a very "just toss-it-together" recipe. You can use any kind of meat you like and would cook very fast with raw or cooked meats. The portions of the ingredients really depend on your tastes so be brave and play with it.
