I found a good sangria recipe and headed to the off license to purchase the alcohol. In the queue, ahead of me, was a man who said he has been a bartender for 20 years now, and that my recipe needed a few touch-ups if I wanted to make it like the Pros. So, here is what he professed to me, muchos thanks to the other submitters for their delicious versions.

Calimocho, or kalimotxo, is a very popular Spanish cocktail that is served in many bars and prepared by Spanish youth during traditional 'botellon' parties. Calimocho originated in the Basque region of Spain but has spread throughout the entire country and to many other parts of the world. Coca-Cola is the 'authentic' cola for preparing calimocho.

This is an authentic version of the popular sangria. You can add any fruit that you want, but I find that apples and pears absorb all the rum. I have much success with Burgundy wine and white rum, though spiced rum is nice too.

Lethal sangria
A very typical spanish sangria, with a twist at the end.. I make this for parties and bbqs, I always make a 5 litre bucket it's cheap and very cheerful, always a hit!! It has vodka but the sangria is so fruity that it won't be noticed.

I often make some sangria when I have friends coming over. It is not too expensive and everyone loves it. With a combination of apple, banana, kiwi fruit and lemon, as well as peppercorns, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon - it is a flavourful, incomparable sangria!

Most of the 'Trou Normand' recipes you see call for sorbet, but the real Trou Normand is just Calvados without sorbet at all. Trou Normand is a palette cleansing 'break' between courses, which is prevalent in many homes and restaurants throughout Normandy. I like Calvados from Domfront, a small city in Normandy, which has a wonderful flavour.

This is a recipe from my mother's recipe book from 70 years ago.She made this drink ready for the workers in the hayfield, and it was welcomed by them on a hot sunny day, and the smell of this drink is so evocative of the sweet smell of hay being worked. This is so easy to make, and costs so little, and is ready to drink after a few days, but if kept, becomes fizzy and alcoholic. The children love it, but make sure they drink it soon!
