My kids do not like anything fishy. I snuck this one by them and they loved it. I serve them as snacks, in sandwiches or as dinner with rice and a veggie on the side. Personally I like to dip them in horseradish.

Fish pie is usually popular with children, who may not otherwise be keen on fish. In this version, leek and watercress are added to boost the vitamin value, and sliced potato and cheese make an appealing topping. Try it with roasted tomatoes on the vine, cooked for about 15 minutes alongside the pie or steamed broccoli.

Sardines with a crunchy nut and watercress stuffing make a simple yet healthily balanced meal when served with spicy new potatoes and a salad. Sardines are a good buy – inexpensive, quick to cook and high in beneficial fish oils and vitamins. For speed, buy ready cleaned and scaled sardines.

One of my all time faves! Something my mum used to make for me and I make for my kids, great change from meatloaf and good for packed lunches, picnics and quick dinners! Really good with Jacket potatoes and salad or veg.

Oily fish is an essential in everyone's diet, and herrings are great value for money. The acidity of the wine complements the rich flesh perfectly.
