This is my "anything goes" recipe, which means you can use whatever you have handy in the cupboard or fridge!

Teenagers especially will love this unusual pie, which layers flour tortillas with diced chicken and red kidney beans in a spicy tomato, sweetcorn and pepper sauce. Serve with a green salad and a side dish of diced avocado sprinkled with lime juice, for a meal with an exciting Mexican flavour.

This is a warming dish for the cold weather months, rich with lean beef, celeriac, chestnuts and shallots. The suetcrust pastry lid is flavoured with herbs, and breadcrumbs are added for a light, crumbly texture so the pie is not heavy to eat. For extra vitamins serve with lightly cooked spinach.

Black Sheep Ale reminds me of walking the Yorkshire 3 Peaks last year. They serve 'Black Sheep Pie' along the route and I thought… I can do that. Well maybe anyway. You can do it with any other ale too I suppose, and I used to do something similar with Guinness, but found that it’s got a slightly more bitter aftertaste to it than the Black Sheep.

Calzone is a bit like an Italian version of a Cornish pasty, but with the tasty filling sealed inside pizza dough rather than pastry. This recipe combines diced chicken with olives, roasted peppers, fresh basil and mozzarella cheese to make an ideal snack for a packed lunch or picnic.

Perfect on a chilly autumn evening...it's been in my family for years. The cinnamon may be a surprise ingredient, but it adds a good rich flavour.

A good pie is perfect comfort food, and this one is no exception. For a healthy balance, serve with plenty of seasonal greens.

These filo pastry rolls make an excellent starter, or you could serve two rolls each for a light meal. The filling is a colourful mixture of low-fat minced chicken and plenty of vegetables, with a little smoked ham and fresh herbs to add to the flavour. The rolls are served with a piquant cranberry relish.

Spicy lamb chilli with beans makes a great base for this warming version of shepherd's pie. The crisp, garlicky potato crust tops it off fabulously.

Colcannon is a simple, warming Irish potato dish, combining mashed potatoes with shredded cooked cabbage and chopped spring onions. Here it is used as a lovely pie topping for chicken cooked in cider with sliced apples and carrots. The pie is a well-balanced meal in itself, needing no accompaniments.

This has always been a favourite in our family since I was little. My mum gave me the recipe last year, when I cooked it for the first time. Now it's not just for Christmas anymore! It's fab warm, but also good cold. This can be made in advance and chilled in the fridge

This is a wonderful, savoury, quiche-like pie that I use as a vegetarian main dish. It could also be altered for use as a starter if made using mini-tart tins. It always gets rave reviews!

This classic favourite makes a comforting meal, especially on a cold day. Lean minced beef is a healthy filling that takes minutes to cook, and the topping is quickly browned under the grill. Serve with peas or seasonal greens. Delicious!
