Perfect for feeding a crowd at a summer barbecue, this is a tasty twist on the classic American recipe for baked beans. The variety of beans used gives the dish great flavour, along with the streaky bacon. Try this for a break from the ordinary. If you don't have French's mustard to hand, substitute half a tablespoon of English mustard.

This is a dish from the Eastern seaboard of America, where the pork and beans are traditionally simmered slowly in an earthenware casserole. It is the kind of dish that you can prepare ahead and leave to bubble away while you tend to other things. Baked jacket potatoes and crusty bread are perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce.

These oven-baked beans are cooked slowly to create a richly flavoured vegetable dish – a revelation if you've only ever eaten the tinned variety. Serve alongside grilled pork chops, together with potatoes or bread.

Tempt children to enjoy vegetables with this easy leave-to-cook dish of vegetables and baked beans spiced up with barbecue sauce and with a top layer of melting smoked cheese and sliced potatoes. Delicious!

This is a traditional dish in the American South. Okra is dredged in seasoned polenta, then fried until golden. Worth a try if you can find fresh okra.

My grandmother has been making this dish for all special occasions for as long as I can remember. Everyone who has tried it has loved it... hope you do too.

Okra works well with tomatoes in this Creole-inspired vegan side dish.

This is a potato side dish recipe I discovered in Bermuda. I have made changes to it as some of the ingredients are not freely available in Europe. I have named it after the capital of Bermuda - Hamilton. Obviously the use of saffron is restricted by price so a saffron substitute could be used instead.

Everybody loves this, and I'm always asked for the recipe whenever I make it. Serve with pitta triangles, crisps or Ryvita. For a version that is lower in fat and calories, try using light cream cheese and half fat creme fraiche.
