This combination is so good together and it's a great way to get your kids eating fruit. I make this for my daughter's lunch and she loves it.

The ultimate version of a peanut butter sandwich takes some good hearty bread packed with sesame and sunflower seeds, with sweet mashed banana as a perfect partner for the peanuts. Serve with crisp apple or fresh, juicy pineapple wedges for extra fruit value.

Naturally sweet and moist, these make a great addition to a packed lunch. They are also a good way of getting the family to try some more unusual grains and seeds, and add new healthy ingredients to the diet.

Flapjacks are a favourite sweet treat for lunchboxes as well as for coffee or teatime. The modern streamlined version here uses less butter than usual, and adds dates for natural sweetness as well as walnuts and sunflower seeds for extra texture. The result is both nutritious and delicious.

A spice blend that is wonderful. The more you eat it the more addictive it becomes. Serve with toasted crusty bread and olive oil. Dip bread into olive oil, then into the hazelnut mixture and enjoy this unique and addictive mix.

This dish of dates stuffed with chopped nuts was once savoured in Ancient Rome. You can replace the pine nuts with almonds if you prefer.

This heavily fruited German-style loaf is good at tea-time, served thickly sliced, or lightly toasted and buttered for breakfast. It contains no added fat (the fat present comes from the nuts), but the dried fruits – a mixture of apricots, pears, prunes and figs – give it a rich, moist texture and good keeping qualities.

Here is an updated version of the traditional Greek dessert, made with a cinnamon-spiced filling of dried dates, dried mango and pistachio nuts, layered with filo pastry. Although this baklava uses less fat and honey than usual, it is most definitely a special sweet snack and sure to be a winner.
