This is a recipe I adapted from my grandmother's. This warm and comforting soup is easy to make and perfect for a Sunday evening with crusty ciabatta.

In Asia, there are different kinds of 'noodle soup'. This one is a great comfort food on a cold day, but also light and healthy. Quantities are arbitrary - adjust to own taste. Very important to add the shallots as they give the fragrance and flavour. Instead of egg noodles, sometimes I use macaroni. If you are adventurous, eat with chopped hot chilli pepper or add some dried chilli flakes to make the soup spicy.

When our children were little my friend gave me this recipe which hides vegetables in the sauce; my children still love it as teenagers. It freezes very well so I am never without a quick meal to hand. It can be used on its own over pasta or with the addition of single cream makes a luxurious soup. A vegetarian version can be made without the bacon.

An authentic Scotch broth recipe using the authentic lamb, rather than beef which you often see today. You can use beef if you prefer, though I adore the lamb.

This takes some time, but is well worth the effort. I use a food processor. It is a hearty soup, great on a cold winter night. Serve hot, topped with soured cream.

There's no waste with this soup. Use the whole broccoli head, including the stalks, to really make the most of those valuable antioxidants.

Make the most of brussels sprouts while they're in season. This delicious, nutritious soup is perfect winter food – so enjoy it when sprouts are piled high in the shops.

A hearty soup, great for a cold, blustery winter day. It is best cooked one day ahead, refrigerated overnight and heated just before serving.

This is a thick, hearty soup. Kids love this because of the cheesy flavour.

This healthy chicken and vegetable casserole makes an easy mid-week meal. To make it even quicker, you could use supermarket washed-and-cut carrots and broccoli, ready to go from packet to pan. Mixed wild and long-grain rice goes well with the casserole, and adds sustaining and nourishing carbohydrate.

Made with fresh, raw salad vegetables and thickened with bread, this tangy soup is inspired by the Spanish classic, Gazpacho.

Cauliflower makes the most divinely creamy, mild, sweet-tasting soup and looks particularly pretty sprinkled with fragrant, dark green chives.
