These little Russian pancakes have a deliciously distinctive flavour. For a more luxurious starter, top with a spoonful of dip or sour cream.

These healthy wraps flavoured with goat's cheese, rocket and dill spread make great light lunches, portable feasts and super-quick suppers. They will keep for a week or two, and can also be frozen.

Forget about smothering toasted crumpets in butter; this low-fat topping is really yummy and much healthier. Lightly mashed bananas are mixed with creamy fromage frais and warm spices and piled onto crumpets, then finished by drizzling with honey and grilled until bubbling. It's the perfect quick sweet snack.

Croustades – made from thin slices of bread pushed into bun tins, brushed with melted butter and baked to crisp – are a great alternative to pastry for savoury tartlets. These are filled with a mixture of onions and sun-dried tomatoes. Both the croustades and filling can be prepared ahead, then warmed and assembled for serving.

This is one of my favourite desserts to make for company in the spring. It’s easy with store-bought sponge cake and it looks like it took hours to prepare with the candied fruit/ricotta filling and green tinted marzipan covering. Some variations use gelato instead of ricotta, but I prefer it best with ricotta.

A simple, homely dish of diced challah bread baked in a cheesy custard with leeks and spring onions makes great comfort food, and is an excellent way to use up slightly stale bread. Serve with a crisp salad of cos or Little Gem lettuce leaves tossed with sliced cucumber and halved cherry tomatoes.

To make a soup into a complete meal, sometimes you need a little more than just a hunk of bread. These wraps can be eaten on their own, but are best served with Roasted Cherry Tomato Soup (recipe on this website) for added protein.

A feast of colourful vegetables makes a superb topping for a pizza-style ciabatta. The bread soaks up the aromatic roasting juices so that it is deliciously moist with a crunchy crust. If you want to boost your vegetable intake even more, serve it with a leafy herb salad.

Garlic mushrooms make a delightful starter, but classic recipes tend to use generous quantities of butter. This version, pepped up with mustard, is deliciously buttery without being over-indulgent. A simple salad of finely shredded white cabbage and chopped spring onion would be a good accompaniment.
