Here's a new version of beans on toast, combining creamy butter beans with crisp bacon, curd cheese and mustard. With a crisp salad alongside, it makes a super meal that is ready to serve in about 15 minutes.

An excellent hearty and warming family meal. Can be mildly mouthwatering or hot as you dare. It can also be varied ever so slightly by trying different flavoured corn chips/tortilla chips. Try zingy lime or fragrant chilli varieties to suit your own tastes. I have seen chilli lasagna recipes before but always using pasta sheets which doesn't feel very Mexican to me. Serve with a crisp cooling salad dressed with mint, cucumber, yoghurt or soured cream.

Comfort food, pure and simple, using storecupboard ingredients. Serve with fried egg and grilled tomato for a hearty breakfast or brunch, or on its own with some green veg for supper.

Named after the dense fogs – once a regular occurrence in London – this thick pea soup is sustaining, nutritious and very simple to make.

This was a staple recipe in my late teens/early twenties and I still use it now if I want to make an easy throw-together tea for lots of people which is filling and cheap!

Sausages without skins are simple to prepare, and you know what goes into them when you make them yourself. Here home-made pork sausages flavoured with sun-dried tomatoes and leeks are cooked in a herby batter, then served with mashed root vegetables and home-made baked beans for a satisfying healthy meal.
