This is an adapted family recipe. It is a lot of work, but worth the effort. If you do not have a slow cooker, you can bake the ribs for 2 to 3 hours, covered, in the oven.

Perfect for feeding a crowd at a summer barbecue, this is a tasty twist on the classic American recipe for baked beans. The variety of beans used gives the dish great flavour, along with the streaky bacon. Try this for a break from the ordinary. If you don't have French's mustard to hand, substitute half a tablespoon of English mustard.

This is a dish from the Eastern seaboard of America, where the pork and beans are traditionally simmered slowly in an earthenware casserole. It is the kind of dish that you can prepare ahead and leave to bubble away while you tend to other things. Baked jacket potatoes and crusty bread are perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce.

This is a recipe that I did a couple of years ago. It takes some time, but it's worth it.

These are tender and the meat falls right off the bone. Ask a quality butcher for baby back ribs or pork loin ribs.

Butternut squash, green beans and sweetcorn make a superb combination in this fast and tasty stew, based on a Native American dish. Serve with crusty bread.

This is easy especially if you live near a good farm shop that sells dates already stuffed with nuts. I've used almonds, pecans and cashews - all work. This is great when you need an appetizer in a hurry. I buy everything at Garsons Farm Shop in Esher.

This is an excellent dish for a summer barbecue party. Make the ribs in advance, and when your guests have arrived, finish them off on the barbecue. You'll have them wondering how they got so tender and tasty so fast.

These easy beef or pork meatballs are a welcome addition to any meal. Try serving with a fresh tomato and onion salsa and pasta or oven-baked potato wedges (see footnote), if you have time. Put these on the top shelf of the oven before starting the meatballs, and they will be ready by the time the meatballs are cooked.

This tempting salad combines smoky ham, red onion, sweetcorn, canned black-eyed beans and lots of fresh coriander in a spicy soured cream dressing. For generous, meaty chunks of ham, buy pieces from the deli counter rather than thin pre-packed slices. Serve with tomato wedges and crusty fresh bread.

Pueblo Indian tradition calls for the addition of corn or potatoes to this dish. Serve with a big green salad and a pile of warm tortillas. It also makes a wonderful filling for enchiladas.

Pork has an undeserved reputation for being fatty. Modern breeding and butchery techniques mean that many cuts are now extremely lean.

This colourful dish of prawns, chicken and spicy chorizo sausage looks and tastes spectacular, yet it is so easy to make using a time-saving, ready-made salsa for flavour. Serve with a green salad. Delicious!

The best ribs are cut from the loin, one of the leanest areas of pork. These ribs are seasoned, boiled until tender, then baked with your favourite BBQ sauce. That's it!

This is a flavourful, mildly spicy soup made with green chillies and pork. It is a traditional, staple recipe in New Mexico, USA.

For those who like it spicy, this is a quick and easy recipe for party nibbles or canapes. Only three ingredients required: bacon, Cheddar cheese and green chillies. Use fresh jalapeno chillies if you can find them.
