When our children were little my friend gave me this recipe which hides vegetables in the sauce; my children still love it as teenagers. It freezes very well so I am never without a quick meal to hand. It can be used on its own over pasta or with the addition of single cream makes a luxurious soup. A vegetarian version can be made without the bacon.

A Spanish-style bean soup that's packed with flavour. Andouille is a spicy, heavily smoked pork sausage that is often associated with Cajun cooking. If you can't find Andouille, try fresh chorizo or a spicy Italian sausage.

This is a simple recipe for Chinese barbecue pork buns. A wok equipped with a stainless steel steam plate (a plate with holes to allow steam to pass) is required to make these. You will also need to follow the recipe on this site for Hom Bao (Chinese steamed buns).

Cucumber and yoghurt provide a cooling contrast to pork escalopes rolled around a hot, ginger-spiced stuffing. Try serving with boiled rice, steamed green beans and Ratatouille Chinese-Style (on this website).

Quick, simple grilling is a good way to turn these low-calorie, zinc-filled treats into a regular favourite. Use lean back bacon for this dish as it is lower in fat than streaky bacon. Sweet-flavoured Wiltshire cure bacon would be ideal.

A classic Scottish breakfast dish of smoked haddock (haddie), traditionally Finnan haddock, and bacon (ham). This recipe is lighter than the original, cooked with only a little butter and some half-fat crème fraîche.

Sweet leeks, aromatic basil and savoury Parma ham combine with mozzarella cheese to make a sophisticated pizza-style topping for wholemeal muffins. For a crisp and refreshing contrast, serve with a simple salad of watercress sprigs and coarsely grated carrot tossed with extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice.

Lean pork marinated in a zesty Mexican spice and citrus mixture is griddled until succulent, then sliced thinly and served in soft flour tortillas. The finishing touch is a fresh avocado salsa.

Made mainly from storecupboard ingredients, these mini pizzas are incredibly quick and easy to prepare. Topped with tasty ham, luscious pineapple and sweet corn kernels, they make a tasty snack and are much lower in salt than most bought pizzas.

Hamburgers are always popular for casual meals, but can be high in saturated fat. This lighter version, made with lean minced pork, is just as flavoursome, and fresh apples and spring onions contribute to your five-a-day. They're delicious spread with sweet chilli sauce. Can also be barbecued.

A superb combination of flavours, conveniently roasted all in one big tin. The pork is best marinated ahead, if time allows. A spicy fruit relish would make a great accompaniment.
