This is a warming dish for the cold weather months, rich with lean beef, celeriac, chestnuts and shallots. The suetcrust pastry lid is flavoured with herbs, and breadcrumbs are added for a light, crumbly texture so the pie is not heavy to eat. For extra vitamins serve with lightly cooked spinach.

Rich pies in many forms have long graced the British table. This one is light and healthy with a filo crust and protein-rich meat and vegetable filling.

A good pie is perfect comfort food, and this one is no exception. For a healthy balance, serve with plenty of seasonal greens.

This has always been a favourite in our family since I was little. My mum gave me the recipe last year, when I cooked it for the first time. Now it's not just for Christmas anymore! It's fab warm, but also good cold. This can be made in advance and chilled in the fridge

This classic favourite makes a comforting meal, especially on a cold day. Lean minced beef is a healthy filling that takes minutes to cook, and the topping is quickly browned under the grill. Serve with peas or seasonal greens. Delicious!

As a goalkeeper for a top UK soccer team, I revel in my nickname as the "pie man". This is my favourite post match pie. Enjoy with a pint of scrumpy.

Guinea fowl cooked with shallots, ‘meaty’ chestnut mushrooms, peas and spinach in Madeira wine makes a great pie filling. In this modern version of a traditional favourite, the filling is baked in a pudding basin topped with a lovely, soft-textured potato pastry crust. Serve with Brussels sprouts and baby carrots.

A hearty hotpot of lean lamb chunks, leeks, carrots, tomatoes and broccoli with a herbed scone topping is sure to satisfy a hungry family. To complete the meal, serve with lightly steamed green beans or another seasonal green vegetable, to boost the vitamin content of the meal.

In Lancashire, when I was a lad, we had this at school. English cookery may be laughed at throughout the world, but this ranks alongside egg and bacon buttys on fried bread as one of the world's culinary masterpieces. Pupils would queue all lunchtime to have this, even though we knew that Nora, the chief 'cook' used to put her false teeth into anything she cooked for good luck.

With its firm texture, haddock makes an excellent pie filling, especially when teamed with cider, potatoes and prawns. Try serving with steamed savoy cabbage and chunky carrots.

You can also make this as one large pie, but I prefer to make it with individual ramekins. The cream adds richness and brings out the delcious taste of the mushrooms, thyme and leek. An easy and quick way to get your family to eat vegetables!

This fish pie recipe is a family favourite. It's great to warm you up on cold winter evenings, or in the summer served with a fresh green salad. You can use Cheddar or Red Leicester if you prefer. A plain béchamel sauce is also tasty, but do try adding just a little nutmeg.

This is a deliciously rich, savoury pie. You can simply use white mushrooms or re-hydrate some dried wild mushrooms but I like the flavour combination of crimini, portobello and oyster mushrooms. Use supermarket ready rolled pastry - it's so much easier!

This pie is ABSOLUTELY the best meat pie I have ever had in my life! This recipe was found whilst I was on the train and found that somebody left it on the seat. So I took it. Then I made it. Thank you to who ever left it on the train! Sometimes, I just make the stew and serve with mashed spuds.

An apple pie with a thin layer of toffee over the apples. It's great!

Venison stays juicy when it is cooked slowly and gently. Here it is combined with lots of vegetables to make a healthy, hearty family meal.

A classic family favourite, made with healthy venison rather than beef. The traditional potato topping is given extra nutrients and flavour with the addition of parsnip.
