A Spanish-style bean soup that's packed with flavour. Andouille is a spicy, heavily smoked pork sausage that is often associated with Cajun cooking. If you can't find Andouille, try fresh chorizo or a spicy Italian sausage.

Silverside is a lean cut of beef, but you can also use plain or salt brisket. The dumplings puff to twice their original size, so allow plenty of room in the casserole.

Although this is a hearty soup, laden with vegetables, it has a delicate flavour. Home-made stock is best, but you can use a good-quality bought stock (chilled or from a cube or powder); if using a cube or powder, do not add additional salt at the beginning of cooking as you may find these products provide enough salty seasoning.

Instead of the usual chilli con carne, try this healthy tofu chilli that's chock-a-block with beans and veggies, too. For even more veg, try adding a chopped red pepper and some diced courgette.

This hearty pumpkin soup calls for pumpkin puree, but feel free to use the same amount of fresh pumpkin. Likewise, use any type of bean - black, pinto and borlotti beans would also work well in this recipe!

This isn't your usual chilli con carne. Black beans and turkey mince make for a delicious twist on the classic. This hearty soup is an easy - and healthy - way to feed a crowd, and also freezes well. Top with grated Cheddar.

A variety of vegetables ensures that this wonderful soup is as healthy as it is delicious. The broth can be prepared a day in advance, ready for adding the fish at the last minute, which is useful when cooking mid-week meals. Planning ahead like this means a healthy dinner can be on the table in minutes.

Pumpkin blends to a richly coloured, ultra-smooth soup, here enhanced by the wonderful flavour of rosemary. Crunchy hazelnut, pumpkin and rosemary muffins complement the soup perfectly.
