Silverside is a lean cut of beef, but you can also use plain or salt brisket. The dumplings puff to twice their original size, so allow plenty of room in the casserole.

For my family, Bonfire Night isn't complete without a slice or two of sticky parkin. Let this sit for a few days before serving for best results.

The simple, delicious flavours of this soup will make it popular with all the family. Try it for lunch at the weekend, served with plenty of crusty bread and fresh fruit to follow.

The oriental spices that flavour curry – popular since colonial days – may have medicinal properties too. Turmeric, for instance, is said to improve circulation and relieve digestive problems.

Rabbit and hare are both low-fat, high-protein meats. Both are rich in iron, B vitamins and phosphorus. Rabbit meat is pale and mild, whereas hare is dark and strong, and needs to be cooked for longer, in plenty of liquid.

A traditional homemade stew with tasty ingredients. You can add whatever veg you like but because I don't like onions or most veg, I like very simple.

Perfect for a cold winters day with that little kick. Slow cooker on in the morning, perfect when you get home.

An easy to prepare, rich and tasty dish that is good enough for a dinner party or dinner at home. Alternately, this can be cooked in a slow cooker on low for 6-8 hours.

A hearty slow cooker meal that is simple to make and satisfying to eat, especially on a cold day! Top each bowl with some grated Parmesan and serve with warm, crusty bread, if desired.

Reminiscent of my favourite autumnal treat, this apple cake is moist, delicious and impressive.
