Perfect for feeding a crowd at a summer barbecue, this is a tasty twist on the classic American recipe for baked beans. The variety of beans used gives the dish great flavour, along with the streaky bacon. Try this for a break from the ordinary. If you don't have French's mustard to hand, substitute half a tablespoon of English mustard.

This is a dish from the Eastern seaboard of America, where the pork and beans are traditionally simmered slowly in an earthenware casserole. It is the kind of dish that you can prepare ahead and leave to bubble away while you tend to other things. Baked jacket potatoes and crusty bread are perfect for soaking up the delicious sauce.

Quick and easy, with a gorgeous non-pastry topping. Try a variety of apples, mix it up...

This is a recipe that I did a couple of years ago. It takes some time, but it's worth it.

Apple Betty is a classic American pud that dates from colonial days. It's essentially an apple crumble, perfect paired with custard or ice cream. Instead of apples you can use fresh berries, though apple is traditionally used in this dessert.

This was my gran's apple pie recipe. I have never seen another apple pie quite like it. It will always be my favourite and has won me several first place prizes in local competitions. I hope this pie becomes one of your favourites as well!

This is a recipe that was handed down to me from my great aunt. My husband asks me to make this for all special occasions.

These are tender and the meat falls right off the bone. Ask a quality butcher for baby back ribs or pork loin ribs.

This is an excellent dish for a summer barbecue party. Make the ribs in advance, and when your guests have arrived, finish them off on the barbecue. You'll have them wondering how they got so tender and tasty so fast.

Pumpkin pie is an American classic, served at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This recipe is perfect in autumn and winter when pumpkin is in season. Try substituting butternut squash for pumpkin, if desired!

This main dish has a rich, smoky flavour and tastes great with lemon-scented rice. This dish makes up one part of of a Tex-Mex vegetarian buffet and is ideal for serving alongside green rice, salsa cruda, stir-fried vegetables, rich roast onions, and coriander and cabbage slaw (all of which can be found on this site).

Compared to most cheesecake recipes, this version isn’t particularly high in fat, as it uses cottage and curd cheeses instead of the traditional cream cheese, and is lightened by folding in whisked egg whites before baking. The delectable filling is set atop a crunchy digestive biscuit and oat base.

Serve this traditional american dish with barbecued chicken or pork or as a main course with bread, rice or potatoes.

Being steamed rather than baked, this mixed-grain bread has a soft crust and close texture. It gets its dark, rich colour and flavour from molasses. It was created by American settlers in the days before most homes had ovens.

A Cajun twist on a classic stuffed green pepper, with smoked sausage, prawns and Cajun seasoning.

Pueblo Indian tradition calls for the addition of corn or potatoes to this dish. Serve with a big green salad and a pile of warm tortillas. It also makes a wonderful filling for enchiladas.
